Lettre de candidature

Monsieur Cl... R
RH9 8BL Godstone

Sought job: Subtitler / Translator Rapid, confident, accurate, intelligent worker, always happy to learn and confront new challenges. Expertise in Medical / Sports / Technology / Literary / Film / Documentary / Television and other fields

I have just completed a Masters Degree in AudioVisual
translation at the University of Leeds. Throughout this course, I have been
able to expand and practise my knowledge of subtitling techniques, tools and
standards, in English (for the deaf and hard of hearing), and from French and
Spanish, both of which I speak fluently. It has been an extremely exciting
course, very professionally oriented, giving me a real depth and breadth of
experience in subtitling.

To say that the sole focus of the course was subtitling
however would be to misconstrue a highly formative and incredibly interesting
year. In contrast to my colleagues on more garden-variety translation courses,
I was able to gain experience in professional projects as a translator and
proof-reader, as well as a subtitler. Aside from providing me with
financial and communication skills and self-reliance that I currently depend on
as a freelance transcriber, these projects required versatility, and offered
interesting challenges, further developing my flexibility in a professional
environment. I feel that this adaptability is one of my key attributes: I have
worked in a great variety of professional environments, from financial
research, to teaching in two schools in southern France, to managing a bar at a
local restaurant.

This variety of experience has helped hone my awareness of
the constantly changing circumstances that force flexibility and adaptation to
our work: this is precisely why I love it. I have a deep engagement with
language, and love of problem solving: I relish being able to find new ways of
expressing something. I find solutions rapidly, am receptive to criticism and
learn very quickly, work accurately and am very comfortable with new
technologies, software and standards: thanks to my course, I am practised in
the use of Swift and Isis subtitling tools, a variety of CAT suites, as well as various video and audio editing tools, all of which I have
been able to use under the supervision of industry professionals. I find the
challenges of learning new tools exciting: as a fast learner I thrive when
presented with difficulties to overcome under time pressure.

Another key aspect of the course, and a great source of
satisfaction in my personal life, is teamwork. Whilst individual accountability
is crucial in such a fast-paced environment, functioning well as a team is
fundamental, and throughout my course I have been required to edit and analyse
my own work and that of others. A changing environment is a stimulating one,
one where my individual strengths are valued as much as my natural
compatibility with others. As a language professional, I am confident, quick,
and accurate; as a team player, I am communicative, patient and happy. I learn
quickly, think fast, and relish the dual challenges that you offer, at the
crossroads of language and technology.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. I very much hope
that I can have the opportunity to discuss how I could contribute to
the work of your company.
